Women’s Credit Program (WCP)/Microfinance Program of MSS

Introduction: The Women’s Credit Program – the first urban replication of the Grameen Bank model in Bangladesh- commenced in 1989 as an integrated income generation project for slum dwellers and urban poor particularly women of Dhaka City, to bring the poor especially the women in the mainstream of the development and create wide employment opportunities with special emphasis on income generating activities through providing credit and encouraging savings. Based on the satisfactory performances, WCP extended its activities to rural and other urban areas of Bangladesh. The WCP operates with the following

Goal & Objective:

  • Institution building by organizing slum and rural based participatory women organizations;
  • Provide credit to groups and individuals for self-help initiative with particular emphasis on women’s participation;
  • Encourage savings of the poor;
  • Raise awareness of the beneficiaries about their rights and the surrounding environment;
  • Increase efficiency, skill and level of understanding through education and training so as to enable them to face any unfavorable situation; and
  • Provide free legal education and counseling to its beneficiaries.

Savings Product: Mandatory Savings, Voluntary Savings (Weekly Voluntary Savings, Monthly Voluntary Savings), Term Savings (Monthly Term Savings, One Time Term Savings)
Insurance Product: Risk Insurance, Safety Insurance
